Inspiration

I wanted to make a collage that expressed my process of becoming more confident as an artist. I have been making art since I was a child, but until the recent years I always felt too shy about showing my work. I am now proud to spread my wings and show the world what I do! The crow symbolises internal transformation. The Butterfly symbolizes rebirth and the shells birth and resurrection. I used a mixture of photographs, paints and pens to produce this collage.

Inspiration

The inspiration actually came from a customer who asked when I was going to make another rave print! They wanted another print that would go with my ‘London’s Nightclubs from Past to Present’ collage they had on their wall. So that is how ‘She’s Stark Raving Mad’ was born!

The Process

I used a mixture of my own photographs either taken at Noisily Festival, outside in nature or images from Unsplash or Pexels (both free to use image site). I have used the same ‘Night Time’ colour scheme, and the reappearance of Magic Mushrooms, White Doves and Smiley Faces, as used in my ‘London’s Nightclub’ Collage. Really enjoyed making this one, I’m already planning the next one!

Inspiration

I often get told by people that they would love to be creative, but they just don’t know where to start! This got me thinking (and dreaming, as the collage kit idea came to me whilst sleeping!) what a good idea it would be to make a do-it-yourself collage kit. A kit that has everything you need (apart from the frames and glue), to make 4 collages! Collage kits are suitable for the complete beginner, but also for someone that has experience, with either making collages or scrapbooking.

Each kit is designed in way that all the images will compliment each other. I have included 4 examples of what I made with each kit, but there are so many ways the images can be put together, so you can really make your art unique. All you have to do is have fun and get creative!

A quirky assemblage, perfect for alerting your family that ‘lunch is ready’!

Inspiration

I was given a drum kit, an old rusty one, but it was the perfect materials for recycled assemblages. This ‘Cymbal Assemblage’ was inspired from my love of making art with a musical theme + I’ve always loved the simplicity of the design and colours of my retro salt shakers!, so I gathered some paints and my mandala dotting art tools that would help achieve this look.

The Process

I started by cutting the wood to size and sanding down the rough edges. Next step was spray painting the largest cymbal with white gloss paint (paint suitable for metal). Once dried, I started to design the edge of the cymbal, keeping it simple -like the salt and pepper pots! I decided to leave the smaller cymbal paint free, embracing all it’s blemishes! Both cymbals were bolted on the backboard, with small wooden pegs (the same depth as the bolt) fitted around the back of the board, allowing the board to sit sturdy, away from the wall.

All of the materials were recycled, apart from the wooden gong mallet! I was a bit indecisive about buying the mallet, but thought it didn’t seem right to have a cymbal with something to bash it with!

Reupholstered, Restyled and Reloved

Inspiration

I found this beauty on a local Facebook selling site. It was going cheap, because let’s face it, it was in a bit of state! I love retro furniture and have restored a good few pieces, but although retro furniture can look cool, it was also the start of the era of mass manufacturing, meaning furniture was not built as solid and heavy as previous years. That said, I know people were generally smaller in the 1950s, but this little piece seems like it would be study for most butts, with no wobbling in the legs.

Although there was a lot of work to do, I knew this lovely little piece deserved to have life brought back into it❤️ I loved spending time restoring it, and I’m really pleased with the result.

The Process

I started by removing the very worn vinyl from the top. Sanding down the wood, then filling all the chips and breaks, before finally adding 2 layers of primer undercoat. I decided to not buy any new materials, and just get by with what I already had. The 1950s retro style wallpaper was leftover from a retro side-table I restyled a few years ago. Both the red and white paint were also used on previous projects. I bought the lovely designer yellow velvet fabric from a second-hand fabric store, knowing that one day it’ll be the perfect for the right project. I love how the wallpaper has tiny flecks of yellow and red, which enhances the yellow fabric and red painted legs.

Inspiration and Materials.

‘Peacocks and Pinecones’ was the first headdress I ever made. It wasn’t too much of surprise that I chose to have a peacock themed one for my first. I have made many things that feature peacocks.

This headdress was made from large pinecones I found on the Ashdown Forest. Peacock and pheasant feathers. Dyed orange bunny tail grasses, wooden butterflies, satin and foam roses and old second-hand costume jewellery.

Each headdress has been made so they are sturdy, lightweight, comfortable as much as its aesthetic beauty.

Inspiration

During the 90’s when I was a young and regular party goer, I used love the bright art backdrops that used to adorn the walls at underground raves and nightclubs. They were painted with a ‘glow in the dark’ paint so they would glow under the UV lights. I wanted to create a piece of art that would bring back those memories, but something that would look great in the day too.

Process

I picked up this huge second hand piece of MDF for £10. It originally was covered with a piece of fabric with Marilyn Monroe’s face on it. Even though I like Marilyn, the fabric had to come off so I could get on with creating my ‘Rave Backdrop’ inspired art. It was made with a mixture of using glow in the dark paints, papers, mirrors and other knick-knacks found in my studio and around the home. I also drilled holes and thread through some copper LED lights that can be switched on at the back.

"Londons nightclubs from past to present" print by Emma Mullender

Inspiration

In 2013 I decided to take a trip down memory lane and make a collage that paid homage to many of the great nightclubs that once graced our capital. Like thousands of others, I had so many great weekends dancing the night away in these clubs. Sadly most of them no longer exist, so I wanted to create a piece of nostalgic art, for not only myself, but the all the other old ravers out there to reminisce the good old days.

The Process

I created this mixed media collage by combining various visual art media. I used photos that I have taken over the years, and recreated my own versions of nightclub logos, such as ‘Ministry of Sound’, ‘Club UK’ and the iconic ‘Orange Man’ who appeared on many flyers during the 90’s at nights at The Rocket and The Hippodrome.

Added info: I gained permission from the Keith Haring Foundation to use Keith’s two dancing men. I also gained permission from the Kentish Owner to use the ‘Blue Plaque’ images. Both greatly appreciated as they both really enhance the art!
