The ‘Rainbow Bridge’ meaning and history.
The Rainbow Bridge, is a touching poem about a mythical place where our precious pets go when they leave earth and ascend to heaven. A place where we will eventually be forever reunited with furry loved ones. The rainbow bridge poem has comforted many grieving pet-parents over the years. If you’ve lost a cherished pet, then you’ve likely been sent this poem by a loved one, read it in a condolence card or on social media.
The Rainbow Bridge was originally written in 1959, by Edna Clyne-Rekhy, and although the poem has emotionally touched the lives of many grief stricken pet owners, until recently, Edna Clyne-Rekhy, a now 83 year-old Scottish artist and animal lover, had no idea that the poem she wrote over 60 years ago to honor her dog, Major, had brought solace to so many others.

The Rainbow Bridge Poem
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, your pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine, and friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and strength, those who were hurt are made better and strong again, like we remember them before they go to heaven. They are happy and content except for one small thing, they each miss someone very special to them who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance, his bright eyes are shining, his body shakes. Suddenly he begins to run from the herd, rushing over the grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cuddle in a happy hug never to be apart again. You and your pet are in tears. Your hands again cuddle his head and you look again into his trusting eyes, so long gone from life, but never absent from your heart, and then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.

Inspiration
Anyone that knows me well, knows that I am totally obsessed with animals, especially cats! Creating pet portraits has often crossed my mind, as I thought it would be a nice addition to my ‘Personality Portraits‘. I feel particularly compelled to make ‘Rainbow Bridge’ portraits, as I know how difficult it is to lose a pet. When my cat, Weasel, died a few years ago, I searched the internet to find a special memorial to honor her life and death. This is where I first read ‘The Rainbow Bridge’ poem.
Although I want to primarily make rainbow bridge tribute collages, I do however welcome all pet portraits.
